If it’s one thing that you need to know about salmon nutritional facts it’s that salmon meat contains a rich abundance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. It’s because of Omega 3 EFA’s that the risk of obtaining heart disease (including heart attacks), Cancer, Depression or Rheumatoid Arthritis is substantially decreased.

The fatty acids are beneficial to any age group that consumes it, from pregnant mothers to infants to the elderly.

History of Salmon Consumption:

Evidence has shown that a healthy intake of Omega 3 in salmon has actually increased life expectancy in the Inuit culture.  The reason for this kind of study was to find out why the Inuit people live so long on a diet of mostly salmon and seal meat which are both high in fat (but the right kind of fat).  The results were astounding and showed that the Omega 3 had physical characteristics that would help the Inuit people reach very old ages because of the salmon nutritional facts.

Salmon Consumption During Pregnancy:

Since salmon is such a great part of a persons diet given the benefits of the nutrition it brings to a human, the same goes for mothers who are expecting.  Through the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, the baby begins brain development, nervous system development and retinas of the eye and the consumption of fish oils such as those found in Omega 3 are essential in their development.  So if the mother is able, she should try to consume a couple of portions of fish that have these Omega 3 FA’s every week.  Other fish that have these FA’s besides Salmon are Herring, Mackerel, Sardines and Tuna.

Okay we all know that at an early age fishing is extremely exciting and kids just love to tag along with their family members and friends to go try their luck at fishing…that’s a given.  But one thing that we may not be aware of is that children are strongly encouraged to consume salmon or the Omega 3 acids because of it’s developmental benefits at such a young age.  These acids are thought to decrease the acquiring of hyperactivity, dyslexia and dysphasia!  Although these findings are still being studied, nutritional salmon facts such as improved concentration are proven due to kids eating salmon regularly.

Doctors on shows like “Oprah Winfrey” (not that I watch it….) have blown people away with the facts of Omega 3 consumption and it’s benefits of a lower heart disease risk of up to 70%!  The John Hopkins Center suggests that An article in Artemis, the magazine run by the renowned John Hopkins Centre, suggests that two portions of Salmon a week aids in the fight against colorectal cancer!  There is documentation of studies that have shown a decrease in irritability, redness and itchiness of Psoriasis while consuming Omega 3.
